    This tutorial is about how to create an environment that will scroll while your puppet walks in place. The Main Idea We will bring the graphic files for the foreground and background separately into Adobe Character Animator. Then we will add a walking behavior to it and after some tweaking, we will be able to move everything together using the arrow keys in the Adobe Character Animator scene. Follow these 7 simple steps and you will have a moving background and foreground for your character to walk in.

    Step 1: Prepare the Artwork for The first step would be preparing the artwork for the environment. We will need to create the graphics for the Foreground and the Background and save them as separate files.

    The artworks can be saved as. You can create your own artwork or just use the artwork in the example files to follow on. The artwork in example files is created in Adobe Illustrator and includes source files for the Foreground, Background, and Middle-Ground. As well as the final. Download an Example Environment.     It should be at least two times wider than the scene width. The wider the image the more walking space there is. The foreground artwork you create should be the same width as the background layer. Import a puppet with a walking behavior applied into the same project. You can use your own puppet or download one from our puppet section.

    We need the puppet to walk in place. Make sure that: The body speed of the puppet you use is set to 0. The walk is controlled by the arrow keys. Nelson is the puppet used in all the example shots in this post. You can download Nelson Puppet here. Step 4: Add "Walk" Behavior Go to the rig view.

    Change the Body Speed to a Negative Value. This value will require some tweaking to fit your scene size and puppet walk settings. Body Speed for Both Foreground and Background should be Negative - so it will move in the opposite direction to the character.

    Set the Foreground to move faster than the background since objects that are closer to us appear to move faster. Tag the Background and the Foreground as Waist. Place your puppet in the scene. Drag both the FG and BG into your scene.

    Place the FG above the puppet and the BG below the puppet. Select and Arm your puppet, background, and foreground together. Press the arrow keys to test the walk. You might need to adjust the speed of your background and foreground to make the walk feel fluid.

    Step 7: Add a Static Base Environment An issue you might encounter when using a scrolling environment in Character Animator is that it will move as long as you press the arrow keys, even if it does not cover the entire scene. You now have a working parallax walking system. You can leave it as is or make it more interesting by adding some interactivity to the environment. Step 8: Assign Animated Triggers to Objects in the Environment Depending on your scene, there are ways to make it more interesting by adding triggerable animations and physics.

    In the example scene, we have a door that can be opened and closed. Window bleeds that go up and down, an animated picture, and even some dangle handle on a few of the lamps just for fun. Now What?

    You can also export image sequences as line art, to paint in another program. You can then take the coloured sequence for further compositing.     Normally, these should be the same values as your Animate document but you can change the size, which is addressed below. Resolution: 72 dpi. Filter: None. Press OK. Flash will then export an image sequence.

    Make sure that the color of the road is set to Next, create a new layer named road strip and create a grey and white rectangular pattern using the Rectangle Tool from the Tools panel, as shown in Figure below. Make sure that the length of the road strip pattern is almost equal to that of the buildings.

    Make sure that the color of the grey part in the strip pattern is similar to that used in road. Place this animation in the center of the road. Animate the road strip as you did for the building movieclip.

    But make sure that the speed of the road strip is double as compared with the moving speed of the buildings. Publish the flash file to see the transition in the animation. Next, move back to the main stage area and create a new layer and name it as logo. Drag the logo.

    Create a new layer in the main stage area and rename it as footpath. Create the footpath using the Rectangle Tool as shown in Figure below.

    Make sure to match the length of the footpath series with the road strip. Align the footpath. Animate the footpath similar to the road strip with the same speed. Publish the flash file to see the effect. Next, in the main stage area create a new layer and rename it as car. Zoom in the to the front tyre area in the screen and create a pattern using the Rectangle Tool. Next, create a new layer over it and rename it as mask.

    Create an oval shape exactly the shape of the rim of the car. Activate the bg layer and create keyframes at frames 3 and 6. Rotate the spokes movieclip at frame 3 by around degrees and add motion tween between the keyframes.
