The English language, while filled with usage rules and confusing pronunciations, is built with many tricks to help define words on the fly.

    Prefixes and suffixes are designed to allow you to quickly understand the meaning of a word, even if you have never seen it before. Just like a chameleon that changes colors to blend in with its surroundings, a suffix changes to match its surroundings! Being able to break up the words and identify the root can help you successfully define the word, even if you have never seen it before.

    While suffixes change the word, your basic knowledge of the English language can help guide you through it! What are Suffixes? A suffix is a group of common letters tacked onto the end of a word to form a new word or change the function part of speech of the word. A suffix will change work into worker, joy into joyous, and shower into showering. In short, suffixes will transform a word to make sure that it fits into a sentence in a way that is grammatically correct.

    The fancy terms for a suffix and prefix is called an affix. These affixes are added to the beginning and endings of words to help define them to the reader. A suffix also serves to change the part of speech of the word it is modifying. For example, a suffix, when added to a verb, noun, or adjective, transform the word into a noun.

    Suffixes added to verbs or nouns change the part of speech into an adjective. What is the Point of Learning this Stuff? Anytime I have to dig into the rules of English, I have to wade through a lot of little sub-rules and different nuances, and even for me, sometimes, it can be time-consuming! What is the point of spending time to learn all of these rules?

    Listening games , listening , students , technique Cristina Cabal Engaging, challenging and highly effective activity to teach students how to do a Listening Cloze Exercise! This is a must-do activity to help students learn the technique for a fill-in-the-blanks exercise. If I have to name the activity most of my older students find highly frustrating, it is probably doing a listening comprehension activity and not being able to understand anything.

    I suspect they are stretching it a tiny bit and they have managed to get the gist of what is being said but, already in a black mood when the audio finishes, they just feel they will never get better. The truth is that getting the gist is not enough when you are unable to answer the questions posed, especially when tested in an exam.

    That, we both know. Though I always tell them that they need to work on this and promise that if they make a habit out of listening every single day, they will eventually get it and blah, blah, blah…, the truth is that we, as teachers, also need to find the time to explain how to do this kind of listening exercises. It seems to me the beginning of a course is the right time to do it and so, this past week, I set out to explain this technique. But, you know me. With a game. Step 1- Choose a Cloze Listening Exercise.

    Step 2: Form Groups Give all students the exercise on paper and ask them to form groups of 3ish people. Step 3. Explain the Task Explain that prediction in this kind of listening exercises is key. Stress the importance of trying to predict two things: The grammatical category of the word s that will fit in the gap: is it a noun, a verb…etc?

    The challenging part: ask students in their groups to try to guess the word s that they think will fill the gap. Ask students to name a secretary in the group that will be in charge of writing down their guesses. Give students some individual time to read the text and start thinking about the options.

    Then ask them to join their groups and decide on one option for each gap. Step 4. The Whiteboard Divide the whiteboard in as many columns as groups- see the picture- and ask the secretaries of each group to come up to the whiteboard and write their options.

    Remember you are teaching them the technique, but it is also a game. Step 5: the Listening Play the audio 2 or 3 times. At this point, ask students to focus on their exercises and forget about their guesses. Step 6: The Winners Correct the listening exercise. Write the correct answers on the board and give 1 point for every coincidence.

    The spelling of the base word never changes. Super easy, right? For example: Thankfully, there are some solid guidelines to follow when adding suffixes to words. Two Types of Suffixes You may have noticed on the free download that the suffixes are divided into two categories. Rules for Adding Suffixes Rule 1: Add a consonant suffix directly to the base word. Rule 2: Check the base word before adding a vowel suffix. Here are the first three guidelines we teach for adding vowel suffixes.

    If the base word ends in two consonants, just add the vowel suffix. If the base word has 1 syllable, 1 short vowel, and 1 final consonant, double the final consonant before adding the vowel suffix.

    If the base word ends in a Silent Edrop the E before adding the vowel suffix. Rule 3: If the base word ends in a single Y, change the Y to an I before adding the suffix. This rule applies to both consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes.
