Things that rule #2: 24 Hours of Lemons

Drawing from the experiences of 4 x time participants and 2 x time winners Want budget racing at its best? Celebrating the win at Morgan Park in Now endurance racing is tough — If regular motorsport has highs and lows, endurance motorsport has summits and crevasses.

It is the ultimate test of man and machine, pushing both beyond physical limits either knew they had. How hard can it be? What is the 24 Hours of Lemons? On the grid prior to the start of the Non-stop race Ok first things first. The 24 Hours of Lemons is an American-born concept that made its way to Australian shores in Its designed purely as a budget-motorsport endurance style event. The concept is pretty simple: 1. Rally together a crew of Drivers 4 or more 2. Install the safety necessities 4.

Drive it until you finish the race or it breaks and if breaks then fix it and keep going Its obviously a little more complex than that, let us explain… 1. Rally together a bunch of motorsport-orientated colleagues. Its imperative to have Drivers who understand that this is a marathon, not a sprint, and will drive accordingly. At least one of you must be mechanically-orientated, and be able to quickly diagnose and solve issues with your car.

The OG crew from A new engine was required after 2 hours of running see bottom right for offending engine 2. Treat this as a loose guideline. More than 6 cylinders? Forced induction? We advise against them both, as with your increase in speed will come an increase in refuelling stops and a decrease in reliability.

This includes your roll cage, seat, harness, fire extinguisher, battery isolator, brakes and suspension components. Be sure to have properly read the rules and regulations before building your car!

Ensure your cage is good quality, ensure your battery isolator does what its supposed to completely kills the engine whilst revving at 3, rpm and ensure your racing seat and harness and safely installed and secure. All the gear, no idea… You will need to invest or borrow in personal racing gear. If you are a first-timer, and have absolutely no gear, satisfying the above may be an expensive exercise. Do the events actually go for 24 Hours? The entry fees and running costs are less, and the day-time only structure means a good nights sleep is had by all.

It also means you have time off the clock to repair and refresh the car on the Saturday night. The proper 24 hour non-stopper — this one separates the men from the boys. This is a bonafide 24 hour race that runs through the dead of night. A much greater challenge of both man and machine, however a challenge we truly relish. After doing two 3 day events, we had a crack at the non-stop event, in which we came out victorious.

After experiencing the tranquility of racing through the night, it was difficult to even consider doing another 3 day event.

Will my team get accepted? The judges also question our aftermarket wheels. Apparently, no one has read the rules. We offer a mealy-mouthed story about eBay and present a phony bill of sale that fools no one, yet we drive away without a penalty and will not have to threaten Lamm with a crushing review of his curious little event. At 4 o'clock, a voice on the PA system informs us the race is starting.

Since there is no qualifying round, starting position is on a first-come, first-served basis — just like Le Mans, where drivers once ran to their kusvira mbuya and drove off. A competitive junker, going about 60 mph at best, covers the five-turn course in roughly 28 seconds. With 33 cars out there, the start looks like the Dan Ryan at rush hour, except no one stops to exchange information after a crash.

In the interest of keeping a modicum of civility on the track, grossly aggressive teams are black-flagged and brought into the pits to spin Lamm's "Wheel of Misfortune. Land on "Train in Vain" or "Stevie Wonder," and a training wheel, or a cane, is welded to a door.

Get stuck on "The Barnyard," and a sheetmetal silhouette of a pig is welded to the roof. Our favorite is the "Grille of Damocles": A metal square with spikes aimed at the radiator is welded to the nose of the car, and any front-end contact results in a game-ending punctured radiator. The welder is the lovely, winged Christine Rotolo, a.

We flirt with fourth place, but then the engine temperature soars to degrees, and we back off the pace. Under Robinson's merciless foot, the mighty V-8 begins to miss. We discover it makes considerably less power as a V After a turn at the wheel, I write the following prescient note: "Love the light-effort power steering.

Once the Aurora reenters the atmosphere, we discover the power steering is gone and that we miss it. Wrestling the unassisted Olds for an hour's stint proves exhausting. Wimps, you say? Get into your car, and without starting it, try sawing the steering wheel back and forth for an hour.

The pride of Oldsmobile soldiers on until our photographer, Morgan Segal, whom we inexplicably put in the driver's seat, hits a tractor tire. Segal limps back to the pits with the front suspension so far toed out that the tires squeal when the car travels in a straight line.

We struggle through the last 30 minutes in 22nd place, only to find that we've won the uncoveted "People's Curse. Neither proved feasible. In the end, three women with pickaxes, claw hammers, and sledgehammers savage the Aurora.

Unsatisfied with the level of "destruction," the crowd rolls the Aurora onto its roof. Cheers erupt. Satisfied, the mob rolls the Aurora back onto its feet. Shocking the mob, the Olds starts right up. Oldsmobile, bitch, Oldsmobile. Think Pintos and Pacers, not Delahayes and Duesenbergs.

The schedule includes stops in nearly every region of the US. The size and scope are impressive. More than 7, drivers participate per year. The total number of Lemons alum is approaching six figures.

Lamm explained that a lot of the cars and safety equipment come from eBay Motors. Finding obscure parts on a tight budget and timeframe is a huge part of the battle. If you need a head gasket for a Chevy Celebrity, where are you gonna get it? Why is Sonoma Unique?
